In this paper studies on the composition, properties and transformation of soil organic matter as their relation with soil forming fractors in the past four decades in China were breifly reviewed. The effect of organic manure on soil fertility and plant growth was discussed. And the importance of the integrated management of organic manure and chemical fertilizer in agriculture was emphasized.
