Soil quality and soil health are fundamental concepts of modern soil science. However, their scientific definitions, conceptual boundaries, and interrelationships remain at the debate stage. We review the main definitions and historical evolution of soil quality and soil health, in terms of similarities and differences from relevant formulations, including the USA, FAO, EU, and the UK. Furthermore, the scientific connotations of soil quality and soil health are analyzed through the lens of soil system functions.
